Get to Know More About St Lucia’s World Indoor Champion Julien Alfred

On 2 March 2024, history was made at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Scotland when St Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred claimed gold in the women’s 60m race.

Julien, 22, is the island’s first world athletics champion. We are rightly proud of her amazing accomplishments on and off the track which is why we thought you might like to get to know more about Julien and how she achieved gold medal glory.

Here are 10 quicks facts about St Lucia’s rising athletics star!

  • Julien was born in Ciceron on 10 June 2001 to Joanna Alfred and the late Julian Hamilton. She has one sister and two brothers.
  • She attended Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School in Saint Lucia from 2013-2015 and St. Catherine High School in Jamaica from 2015-2018.
  • She then went to the University of Texas for a degree in Youth & Community Studies.
  • Julien was the Commonwealth Youth Games 100m champion in 2017.
  • In 2017, Julien was named Saint Lucia’s Junior Sportswoman of the Year.
  • At the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, Julien won a silver medal in the 100m.
  • At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Julien came fifth in the 100m and fourth in the 200m.
  • In 2023, Julien won The Bowerman Award which is the highest accolade given to the year’s best student-athlete in American collegiate track and field.
  • Julien won gold in the 60m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow in a time of 6.98 seconds.
  • Julien, the Saint Lucia Athletics Association, and her sponsors Puma and 1st National Bank, launched the Julien Alfred Foundation in April 2024 to assist local youth with school supplies and athletic equipment.
