The Caribbean Woman: Here’s How to Dress Your Inverted Triangle Figure

If ever there was a shape less associated with the Caribbean woman, it would be the inverted triangle. However, as we’ve discussed in previous instalments, women in our region come in all shapes and sizes. For too long, we’ve perpetuated the stereotype that they are either hourglass or apple-shaped. Look in the mirror and around you. Are you or your female relatives and friends all busty with wide, curvy hips and rears? Presumably not.

Although those body shapes may be most prevalent, many women also fall into other categories, such as pear, rectangle, or today’s focus, the inverted triangle. That said, the inverted triangle shape may very well be the least common. It’s said that less than 5% of the population has it. While that specific percentage is debatable, it is certainly true that comparatively fewer women have wide shoulders and narrow hips.

Demi Moore, Naomi Campbell, and the most popular Angelina Jolie are several celebrities with this form. Always stylishly attired, Jolie has mastered the art of dressing to suit her unique shape, and you can, too. Once again, we’ll have image consultant and founder of Image by Anastasia Nicole, Nicole Thomas, guide you in identifying whether you fall into this category. She will also provide useful styling tips and links to clothing options for the inverted triangle shape.

How to Determine Your Body Shape

First, in case you missed the other body shapes, let’s look at how to determine yours. We examine the correlation between the shoulders, waist, hips, and bust to identify your figure.

Note the measurements of your shoulders, bust, waist, and hips, paying attention to which area(s) are smaller, larger, balanced, or well-proportioned. You can also input these measurements into a body shape calculator to determine your shape.

The Inverted Triangle Body Shape

The inverted triangle body shape is distinguished by broad shoulders that taper to an undefined waistline. The bust size may vary, while the butt is not prominent, appearing relatively flat. This body shape is characterised by a silhouette that narrows from top to bottom. Usually, women with this physique look strikingly athletic. They also often have incredible legs.

Here’s How to Dress the Inverted Triangle Silhouette

In dressing the inverted triangle body, the goal is to bring balance to the body. Since the upper frame is more pronounced, we aim to minimise it while emphasising the lower body. Here are five quick tips on how you can do so:

1. Wear dresses and trousers with embellishments at the waist that give the illusion of a smaller waist.

2. Use wide-leg trousers and flair skirts to balance your silhouette. These add volume and drape the lower body.

3. Avoid clothing that clings to the entire body, as they can be unflattering.

4. Wear shirts and tops that end at the widest part of your hips for a more balanced look.

5. For the upper body, dress in dark colours as they are slimming. As for light colours, restrict them to the lower body.
